LAST DAY. MORE TO COME.

News 8 says it is brought to viewers in HD. Interning(working for free) this semester has definitely help me gain high definition. I mean that in knowledge, experience, vision and pure stokeness about life. It's like a huge step for me in a door of success, almost what I felt when I started this internship.

Today I can't believe I forgot my camera though, I've gotten shots of the news room and control room but not the studio. But I realized this is not the last time I'll see this place. If I get a job here, it'll sicken me even. So today I finally got to talk to the chopper, and being in the "live tv" mode is always a good feeling.

So what's next? Well as a filmmaker I think being anywhere would be fine, but to pursue a career might be a different thing. I'll be saving up to move to the north of San Diego, and I won't be specific since the name of that place is so cliche. It's a place of fake dreams, losers and I'll be joining them. Pumped.

Even though this isn't an awards ceremony but a last day at my news internship, I would like to thank my girlfriend Rejel, my family, all my friends, and the supportive professors and mentors I've had through college. The 6 and a 1/2 years have been long and hard, but also fun at times. I just know my life is going somewhere. I'm not talking about becoming "successful" or living the American dream(which is lame). It's simple, no more no less.

F-18 crashes into home in University City

Super rad day at the newsroom! You can't be in a more intense situation than reporting a "breaking news" report. Today I was really tired and feeling over the whole internship. Basically I wanted this week to be over, I wanted this semester to be over. But there's no rush as my concience guides me. Still I've been waiting for this moment for a year now. It's super duper rediculus that San Marcos requires the 3 semester requirement of a forign language but at the same time it's a blessing in disguise.
Back on the subject of why the newsroom was so rad... there was intensity. This intensity was no joke, an F-18 crashed into a home today. One thing I noticed was the impact of the situation. The intensity of the story affects the news in terms of sponsors, commercials, and other airtime situations. But in order to make sponsors happy, the news channel has to find a time to squeeze in all commercials to make up for their lost time. Here's a slight dilemma, these commercials might be aired at times where viewers aren't glued to their TV. The noon for some reason is a good time or has the most viewers. I'm not going to assume that people watch the news during lunch all the time. Anyways, there were things that answered the questions I always had; Why cover the news that all the other channels will cover? Won't the ratings be the same? It's local news, why even try? The answers for these questions were answered in a direct and simple way. They could be anything from: ethics, passion of doing the news, satisfying sponsors and news fanatics(surprisingly there are people who watch the news like it's a television series).

Since today was breaking news day, stories had to be lively covered, anchors and reporters had to bring out their adlib skills at max level. It was great to see this change of pace. I honestly hate routines, but with a little change you can make or natural changes that are made it might not be so bad.

This is about the time to sign off. I'm doing this post at work and I hate my current part time job as well. It's just an expression, I'm a hater and a player. Peace.

Why is my internet down at home?

I finally figured it out today. Just reset the modem.

But other things are going down, and hopefully with you reading this you won't feel down. But I've encountered some problems in my current music video. I got a new camcorder just for this project. Here's what's wack. It's a miniDV camera that shoots HD and since it's a refurbished camera it isn't playing back what I recorded. Luckily I've experienced the troubles of using electronic and film cameras and basically shit happens. So the only thing I can do is reshoot the footage and hope for the best next time. There was more technical things to talk about, but really that's the whole situation. As Bruce Lee has taught me and other philsophies, keep things simple. The key word is SIMPLE.

So a lesson I'm trying to point out today is, don't stress and make things worst. Just fix what you can and move on.

nice thanksgiving break.

Today was the start of the regular school/work mode. Excited as I should be, I wasn't. I mean its just a "get up and do your thing" type week. 3 more of these weeks to be exact and it'll be the end of the semester. But then again, all people have to go through this, and I'm sneezing right now at this exact MOMENT! Continuing on, I can't stand Vietnamese class anymore. It's not super bad or the teacher sucks, it's her teaching! I just don't understand how a student can go through 2 straight hours of a teacher, professor, or lecturer reading vocab words off a sheet of paper with no interaction to keep the students alive. It's not boring, it's not effective. I will be honest, I did improve in the language throughout the semester, but it could be way better.

Wanted to talk about Algae.

Interestingly enough, I have had a lot of interesting infomation being put in my head today. All from just logging in an interview with a scientist specializing in the research of algae used for fuel. As in gasoline for cars particularly.

So there's a lot of national interest in this, with a burgeting field and the roots of this sort of was in back in the late 70's to early eighties. There was a government sponsor program called the "aquatic species program" which was funded by the national energy renewable lab. They really laid a huge foundation for researchers of alternative fuel where they looked at algae as a possible source for bio fuels and did some really pioneering work. Unfortunately the funding for that program was cut in the 90's and a lot of the funding was shuttled to corn and ethonal work at that time. People have finally realized that there's some really distinctive advantages over a prop plan for fuel production and so that's why there's the shift back to this area.
Since I am not proficient in bio sciences, I definitely have a huge interest in it. So I wanted to know if using eco friendly gas, particularly algae, would ruin a car's performnance. Ultimately on the interview I found out that there is really no difference in the performance of a vehicle using a renewable bio source of fuel. The characteristics of the fuel are identical. In fact one of the pleasant benefits is that bio diesel smells a little like popcorn when it's being burned. So there's no effect what so ever; gas mileage would be the same, the perfomance would be the same, there's no difference at all between the performance aspect of the fuel.

Now as an avid driver there's the question of "are scientists experienced enough to make this happen?" It's actually been quite a while for this technology, it's nothing new. I went on wikipedia and found the first diesel engine that was commercially availible. It was back in the 1900's and the original source of fuel was peanut oil. So the technology has always been there for a long time.

We must realize that algae is availible in swamps, ponds, oceans, and the most random places. The big advantage is that it's renewable. With fossil fuels we burn the fossil fuels, we're producing co2 and have atmospheric issues with that. When you talk about using algae, it's not 100 percent recycling but it's a partial recycling of the carbon so from that aspect the societal benefits are tremendous. People are shooting it in terms of economics at this stage kind of equivalent fossil fuels that's the target. Again the biggest benefit will be that it's a renewable source of energy.

As much as we should be optimistic, there is a downfall to this and we can overcome these challenges. Today I feel pretty accomplished.

what will happen after the internship.

im looking for tv jobs around the city and with the economy being down or so we're told... its pretty hard lookin for a job at a TV station. At channel 8, there's a lot of folks that have stayed for more than 20 years. I think that tells a lot about the job there. It just happens to be something they like and the turnover rate isn't that bad. Seriously I go in every time and everyone seems like they just started the job. It's an attitude I have takin with me and I'm pretty sure it'll go for good.

With such limited opportunities at San Diego for film, I have to hit up Los Angeles and see what mountains I could climb. But for now I can only work on graduation and completing this piece of experience that will turn valuable for me.

LONG THURSDAY, TOUGH FRIDAY

Long and tiring, I had to run back and forth from San Diego to San Marcos. From filming my next craziest music video to documenting another student performance. I have to admit everytime I document events at school it gives me a nother insight in life. What I mean is that sometimes I find answers I look for by doing what I'm doing.

When I document the performances I listen to and view them differently than the regular audience. I think everyone has that question of what they want to do after college. Some people have that answer and some people don't. I do have an answer for myself sometimes and sometimes I don't. So when I document the performances I realize I'm doing what I do best and get better at it. Cinematography. It may be video, but it's the same. When I view the performers, it gives me that vision to see what I would do or suggest to make the show better. I'm not saying the shows are bad, but everything might be different if changes are made.

busy wednesday

TV Station internship, work at the community college, and documenting Tim Miller's main performance.

I have to skip the first two activities of the day and jump to talking about this performance. It was honestly shocking more than cool. I'll go ahead and just say what was shocking, the gay activist performer got naked and as the cameraman it was like shining a bad light in my eye. Of course I'm open minded, but it was not a pretty scene. I saw 20 students on my left and right leave the show right away. I had to stay to record the thing. Now it's hard to be a hippocrit as an audience and accept a woman getting naked and not have a dude do the same. So basically it was the audience leaving that made it more shocking. Alright, but as an unbiased person, I did listen on the performance and found that there was some creativity involved. The story telling in particular was effective because it was a performance art. Editing the thing was easy since that flash was real quick, and I didn't have to really piece the thing together since it was a performance nonstop.

a happy friday

Well on Friday I probably have experienced the best day so far in terms of being productive. Just so I don't contradict the other productive days, this one was a pretty fun day basically. I started off the day at the internship given 3 stories to write; one on Madonna's newest concert tour, the next is of a ski resort in Northern California that opened early, and the last one about a weather pattern known as the "pineapple express" moving on to the northwestern states of the US. Surprisingly I was quite motivated in doin them and when Simone my "boss" or "mentor" took a look over it she only corrected one story. I WAS SURPRISED and of course proud of myself for the day. But still staying humble knowing that either she was in a good mood or I was lucky that my writing was of good quality. Speaking of good mood, I figured out that Simone would be in a good mood since there was some flowers on her desk and not just any flowers it was roses. Sometimes red roses might mean the whole romantic thing, and she must be having a good day from it.

So after feeling pretty stoked about my writing, I pretty much wanted to check it out when it would get aired. But little did we know that the new president had his first conference around 12pm which is the show we work on. So it was pretty dope to find out that the show has to work around press conferences and basically show what's left of the news show at whatever time is left. Ultimately it presses a challenge for the producer making cuts and keeping the right amount so that ratings are still in and sponsors are happy. The show was cut off about 15 minutes leaving only a 45 minute news show. Great experience to know what happens when unexpected events kick in.

After the intern session, I wanted to follow up on the music video shoot with my friends band. It was 1 oclock and I figured if I'm already shooting b-roll shots of San Diego, I might as well shoot B-Roll skate footage. So I meet my friends in Downtown ending up in a skate park to shoot as much as we can for the music video. For this new video, I've been using my new Canon HV20 with my 35mm adapter. A real bonus since I have a fisheye camera lens. After the skate park, we snuck into a hilton hotel parking structure grabbing massive footage there as well, it was empty and the roof had the best location to shoot the video with a great shot of downtown San Diego. This past Friday couldn't have been better.

So here we are today on a Sunday with some light to medium heavy showers, I got to catch the Chargers game a little since I was busy doing some extra photography practice since I haven't really shot in the rain before. It was crappy today since I think I might have caught a cold or knocking on wood, a flu. Either way I caught some rad photos today and I thought I might as well put this in the blog. Alright folks, I should get some rest for tomorrow is Monday and fresh energy is going to be needed.

weather change, president change.

Usually I don't worry so much about politics but how awesome is it to have someone different. I know there's no guarantee for a "better" future but hey it's historically significant. But I definitely wanted to speak out because of certain things that will be changing. The number one thing I want to start with is hip hop music. I know it's totally random, but over the last few decades of the 20th century, the music had certain artists calling out politicians in high power and rhyming the truth. I wonder how it's going to sound from here on out. Are the concious rappers still going to speak out? We'll see...

internet down

Just when it keeps getting busier, something will happen. Unfortunately I've been relying on this tool too much. It's just too convienent. I remember back in the day if you wanted to do research for papers you would go to the library using every resource. You would start from the reference person, who would sit and be super busy helping finding a range of things you want. Next you would go to the catalog viewer and search for articles in print. You may ask how I know about these things even though I am born with a computer background. Well as a kid in the 80's my mom used to take me to the library.
Surprisingly it was a smart choice, because it taught me to use my resources well. There's something good in the library, and that is knowledge. But of course I don't want to be isolated into reading all the time, I do want to keep the social life as well. Anyways the internet was down at the TV station today and at home it wasn't.

I think it's actually good to be a P.A

So after the fact that I know my projector might not be usable till I get a new bulb, I can only concentrate on other things that aren't going to disturb my flow. I got to make sure I am still on track with this blog because it seems to be so refreshing to release my brain juices out in words. Anyways today I was helping the promos department reorganizing the old studio that has been abandoned in the News 8 studio. I was already helping on Wednesday and today was a deeper clean up. We took down lights from different parts of the hangers on the top of the studio and moved them in sections. It was tedious, but it's better than going on the comptuter doing tedious work that can ruin your physical condition.

I'm talkin about the bad ergonomics in the news room, no wrist pads for the mouse or keyboard can cause strain in your wrist. I've been trying to keep exercising, particularly in Martial Arts to kind of work the flow of my whole body. Next there's swimming, it is such a great way to relieve the whole body. By the way, it's so much better to swim in the ocean than a pool sometimes believe it or not. I mean the ocean is not much cleaner than the pool, but it still seems natural.

So back to being a PA for the day, I cleaned out the studio and I got to see some more behind the scenes activity in the promos department. There were more city shots for the new commercial, and it rung a bell in my head when I got to check them out. They were time lapse shots of the city in different locations and those setup shots where exactly what I need for my next music video. Just a reminder to myself, this music video business is not over yet. I maybe busy and any chance I get to rest, I'll take it but I gotta make sure when its time to go in action, its time.

And speaking of time, it's about that time. I'll fill this blog with more stuff after the weekend. But if I'm lucky I'll be able to squeeze in some time on the weekend as well!

Peace.

almost forgot to post on a wednesday again

seriously this semester is crazy, I thought I had this whole thing under control!!! I found out today that in order to complete my graduation process I had to send the transcript to CSUSM from the community college that has the record of me completing my 3rd semester of a foreign language. Not a hassle but seriously it's taking too long. Ah, but the benefit lies here I just wait for the degree to be mailed to my home at the convienience of mail. What old school technology still can do.

this station used 16mm FILM!!

It was hard to believe but it was so dope to know that local news stations used film back in the day, particularly the 1960s and earlier. Okay, after writing that sentence that just made me feel dumb because news was already shot on film and I should have already known that. Okay so where am I going with this? One of the camera guys that I spoked to today showed me his demo and talked about how the station used 16mm film. I think the cool part of this story was that the station still had it in the archives. SUPER SICK. alright I just wanted to spit this story out today. peace out for today world.

engineering department

So this is like the heart of the show. The technical people that make it possible. Satellite communications of the on field reporters are transfered through here. Before a show, the people in this department make sure connections are through and audio sounds dope for the live on air broadcast. But it was cool to be in the one engineering room and to see that it only needs one person to run it. It's not an office or a cubicle. It was like the size of a backyard for one person to operate and control a show's tech communications.

more loggin in text and soundbites

Simone hooked me up with 2 interviews to log. Solar week and water conservation.

It's funny how many things go on in San Diego and I don't even get my ass to enjoy these activities. No wonder I'm always tripping out about not hanging out all the time. Solar week is a promotion to everyone that they can save energy and this earth by using solar. (sounds more like a way to promote businesses) So as I log in this video; I was dead on. It went from being educational to advertising new solar products. But over all it is important to concentrate on my work and not worry about anything else. Solar power is after all a benefit to the earth. But not perfect.

Water conservation is definitely the more important area to catch. According to this scientist talkin on the tape, he says we are already below 40 percent of having no water. So that means even with the crazy rain that might come in December we'll be back to 0 percent of not having enough water. So it would only be appropriate to have rain for a long time to regain all our water so we don't have to take water from the delta's up in northern cali and some from the colorado river. But hey, I don't control these things, I can control my smart use of water though. So conserve conserve conserve.

dying in the news writing process.

It's impossible, I'm given a story that I do not enjoy and I actually suck at doing. I'm going to have to call it crap. So basically this morning Simone had given me a story to write and it's about some person getting stung by a stingray. I mean the story is totally rad and exciting I mean it has comedy and tragedy at the same time, but it kind of sucked that I got brain dead in the process of writing. In the information we can research, I was only given 3-5 sentences and the video. I was totally blanked out. So I typed the story based on the video, and the results seemed pretty presentable. By air time, I was

still haven't improved in newswriting

Usually a typical person would be sad, or emotional about getting a bad grade on a test, or a homework assignment. But this kid here doesn't fall easily. Well it was real funny to make a writing mistake in the news room on one of the news stories I was assigned. After all you can learn from mistakes. It was cool that I got a chance to go one on one with one of the pro news writers giving me a new outlook. What I mean by outlook is definitely a new view of writing. It's as simple as telling a story to your neighbor who might be a person who likes properness, likes something "punchy" and simple all at the same time. I never like challenges, but somehow honestly I really enjoy this one. It's not that I naturally enjoy it, its the fact that if I fail in this I fail in a lot of opportunities. So to not scare myself off, I know I can get this newswriting thing down.

On other situations around my life I'm still in the process of a new job transition in addition to the internship. At a local community college near my house I am getting a job at a tutoring center as a front desk rep. Having a college job or job at school is probably more efficient than working at an outside retail store. Or at least the school job has the better schedule. So at this point in the semester things are changing way too fast, it's kind of fun though.

chopper 8

On Friday, I was given the assignment to ring up the traffic news reporter. Usually the person should be on a helicopter but that day the chopper was going on maintenence. So I basically learned all the terms, lingo, and timing to talk to the reporter. Another notch up on my learning belt. I was to let her know what footage we'll be broadcasting, and get information from her about the kinds of graphics we'll use.
Other than that, school is starting its pressure point. I am in the verge of running from downtown san diego to san marcos to do school work, since my computer is the time killer. Also, my 16mm film class in community college is at the deadline of the first film. FILM, FILM, and FILM has never been such a pain.
The project is a 3-5 minute film shot on 16mm, and to do this correctly you have to be organized. At this time of typing there are so many things going on inside my head, but this is where the philosophy of "doing what you have to do" comes in. Stop thinking, because this is one of those rough weeks in the Fall semester of 2008. End of entry.

The Teleprompter!!!

Super scary day for the teleprompter today, I'm saying as if it was an actual living thing, this was because I had ran it for the noon news show. I was given the ultimate opportunity to operate it live like a theater performance, but this time it was a wide audience. It was not easy because it was the first time and the fear of making a mistake. But of course I had that saying in my mind about "you learn from your mistakes". It all works out. So in the mistakes that I made, I accidentally rolled the teleprompter too slow making the two anchors having to improvise what they had to say. It was funny at first, but getting the show to look bad is no laughing matter.

I hate to have to cut it short today, but I have so many things to do. I have to finish a music video I started back in May, and at the same time I have to start on a new music video for my friend's band: The Upstarts.
Also I have to finish a two page essay for a scholarship application. Super hard. But I speak from the mind and heart it should go smooth. Also, there's a short film I have to prepare for this weekend. If it was video it would be easy, but this time there's a crew and its going to be on 16mm FILM!!!! Alright thats it for now. peace.

At last I might work in the Studio

ST ST Studio. A little segment from Phil Collin's song. Anyways today was nothing special, but to be honest it is a real big step. I'm going to be headed towards working in the studio more often since the second intern is also doing writing. What that meant was that in the newsroom, they can't take more than 2 intern writers since the producer only needs one intern. I happened to ask about how to obtain more knowledge on the studio operations. It's a must for me since I love the hands on work.

So today I met Kenny, who happens to be floor director for the 5:30am, 6:00am and 12 noon news shows. At noon its a little more quiet so I had a chance to see more within the studio behind the scenes. I've seen it all, but I still feel there is much to learn non stop. Cutting to the chase, the floor director was talking with me about hobbies and such and where we are from and i mentioned about being a photographer/filmmaker/designer, we had opened a door to a new conversation for he is a photographer himself. We both opened our flickr accounts showing each other our awesome pics and just totally getting stoked on photo knowledge. So today after talking to him, I felt like enhancing my skills because of his line of work.

Well, today's a typical monday so I'll leave more to talk on the next blog.

a breeze

I have to admit that, when you happen to enter a place with awe it deteriorates gradually as time goes by. Well this internship is starting to feel like work. I don't mean boring, but more like the fact that I'm starting to know a lot more people from the station. It's great, people say their greetings and we move off to work. It's almost non stop, I love it. Ultimately the duties as an intern don't seem as challenging, at least yet. I'm working on the quickness of a newswriter and the flow of a production assistant. By the way, I've tried to talk my way in to doing some production assisting and in a news room that means running the teleprompter setting up some wires.

My intern coordinator Sara is good at setting up these things and it makes my stay feel worth while. I can't say it'll get worse, but I can't say it'll get better either. I'm on a boat and riding the energy of the ocean. I must follow the direction, but not follow it. Never the less I am still learning, not as much as I wanted today but its going to get there.

I have to mention though that the printing and script checks are intense. Let me explain; after all the news writers write out their script for a show like the noon show for example, we take all of it and print it out with the show's rundown or schedule. Then my job is to check off if we have any missing scripts that were part of the show or if any reprints have to be made. Real awesome. I know I'm excited on the little things but thats how stoked one can get, about his future especially. So I'll mark off the scripts there and circle the ones missing or having any problems. This sounds straight forward but with the speed and quick pace energy from a news station its intense.

Besides doing this internship I've still concentrated on my hobbies of filmmaking and photography. I put those two together since the art concepts of design or composition are the same. Speaking of design, I won't be able to mess with as much graphic design as I'd like to but it'll sneak in some where, so my work in the graphic arts will keep moving on up. Alright for now, I'll have to go.

Editing?

I put the question mark after editing because I have stepped into my own arena of video editing. Except there was a slight difference... NO FINAL CUT STUDIO or any brand name video editors. They use a program called NewsEdit, it's standard in most of the San Diego local news stations. I have to not forget that on Monday I missed out on my internship because I LOCKED MY SELF OUT.

GOING BACK IN TIME TO MONDAY:
It was another dumb action made by me, but it could always be prevented. That Monday morning I didn't. So I would really like to take you to 6:45 am, where I woke up naturally even before my alarm. This of course seems like the good sign that I'm all prepared today. I woke up so early that I even had time to work out! And during the busy school semester that is impossible. Anyways, I ate a decent breakfast and jumped to the shower before I left for "work"/interning. I got time to prep the business casual clothing and try out my new shoes from my girlfriend who got me 2 pairs for my b-day. I usually don't ask for gifts but thats another story to tell later on. Anyways I got all ready had the snacks in my backpack, pens, paper, notes, and the journalism dictionary guidebook ready to go. I stepped out about 2 minutes after my mom left and as soon as the door started to close or maybe at the 1 inch point I felt iffy about something, then when the door finally closed I locked myself out. This was real bad, I thought I had left home all ready but I wasn't. I left my keys and my cell phone in a pair of shorts I was wearing in the early morning to use the pool bathrooom near my home. Just a quick reference; I live in an apartment conversion home or "condo" but really its just an apartment that you can purchase. But we have 4 people living there and 1 bathroom. We had to find a solution and the pool next to the house was the best one. Anyways I left my keys and phone there, telling myself not to panic. I was still on a bad morning trip right there, I decided to run to a business center across the street from my home which had nothing but optometrists, dentists, oral surgeons, and baby doctors(i cant think of the name right now). I felt weird to go in at first, cause i didnt want them to think im some weird killer with a fake allibi. I forgot about that stupid thought and just went to the baby clinic and told the receptionist/nurse lady my story and she let me barrow the phone. I called the News8 studio, but unfortunatly I had to go through the lame lobby phone first. At any station or TV place or entertainment industry area I'm going to assume that it's always busy, so I'll expect a 5 minute wait at least. It was bad though, I was waiting with rings on the phone while I felt bad for holding up the phone lines in the office. After I got through, I could only get through a message machine for the newsroom so I went ahead and left the message.

I got back home relaxing now since there was no other thing to do. I waited on my truck bed since I dont need keys to get on it. I took a good nap, and when I woke up the sun was on my face and it sucked. But I woke up to see a tree above me high in the air with bees and birds. I sat up and a ladybug flew on me, I saw it coming straight at me as well. I guess I heard that its good luck, but whatever it was I was enjoying nature around my house. So I officially waited about 2 hours till I could get back home, since my brother had just come back from school to open the door. I called to the studio as soon as I got in, and the intern coordinator said "don't worry just take the day off." I felt guilty and relieved at the same time, thinking wow, I wanted to show you guys my dedication but that was easy. So thus explains my skipping a blog on Monday. But I made it up.

Back to today, I had stepped out of the news producing department and went to the editing department. I talked to a few of the "photographers" who are really just video camera people who are constantly on intense capturing at news locations. But one of the guys Bruce had felt really hopeful on interns since he was one himself at this same station. That was a booster, but I told him I have a different goal than what he had, but not trying to boast. Just telling him the honest truth. So I guess I'll be back on Friday to add another good post. At least its good to me.

1st story that aired for me

Today was not a typical Friday, if I remember correctly I usually do nothing. But today I really took the news thing seriously. I didn't realize though I needed to be more punchy. Anyways, the story I wrote that got aired was about Michael Jordan and some other former NBA stars hitting it off at a celebrity poker tournament. It was awesome. The story was simple, but to have it aired was a great feeling. A first time excitement feeling. Well, I'll have to tell you more on Monday. I want to rest up, because it is my birthday on September 13. Peace out.

2nd day's past.

Well, it wasn't hard to realize that my bad writing skills was catching up to me. But what I did not realize was that after my "analysis" of my story writing skills, my Intern mentor didn't give me bad vibes. My writing skills actually worked out. Now all I have to focus on is the punch up's which is to spice up my writing skills. I have to not just write, but I have to work on writing like a journalist.

It's pretty awesome to learn a new skill set even if it's a challenge. I'm pretty sure this skill set of journalistic writing can add some more variety in my screen writing skills as well. The day seemed to go faster since there was another intern signing on the crew. She is a USD student and said she had fallen in love with journalism. I guess from a conversation with her, I can see passion for work like this. It's going to get repetitive, but I don't see it that way with media, film, or any creative artistic job. It's an evolving process, and that means you must evolve as well. I'll admit I have evolved some more just by doing this awesome line of work.

Still, don't get me wrong because I still am nervous in the newsroom. If I make I mistake, it might pass on TV but for the people inside they might get pissed. Fortunately, I've given up on that fear of making a mistake because being nervous is better than having fear. I hope that makes some sense, but I'll have to sign off for now. Thanks for reading.

Intensity in a Newsroom.

I arrived to the station at 9 o clock, and while I walked in the front lobby I kept it casual. The receptionist in the front recognized me from last Monday's encounter and I quickly made a joke about "this time its for real" that my internship is officially starting. She went with my joke, making the Monday morning a great start.

So without wasting time, she dialed in the internal phone system to call out the internship coordinator. As I waited for my start, I went ahead to look at the lobby TV and saw some pretty lame TV shows. I figured, its a Monday, and its morning so theres a guarentee that the shows are going to be dope. So she finished the phone call, and the intern coordinator Sara, wasn't in yet. So I was instructed to wait in the lobby for a bit until I am sent in the studio.

I thought to myself, "this is dope, I get to chill a bit before this intern adventure starts" so I went ahead and sat on the couches took a magazine off the coffee table and went ahead to read anything interesting. Of course this wasn't possible, I happen to be in a CBS station so the materials they provide will be about their network.

I did notice something real interesting in all the mainstream American television networks from looking at one of these CBS mags. Within NBC, ABC, CBS, and FOX, CBS has shows that look like they cater towards elder folk. And I don't mean the senior old folk, but any body but 1-24. The actors and actresses have a certain look. Well this is just a hypothesis that the network executives have the most power but have the worst choices.

So before I got to finish the magazine, the intern coordinator was ready and waiting to get me started.

I walked in past the security door and followed the coordinator to the "newsroom". As I was breezing through the hallways, I noticed more promo stuff; posters of tv dramas , sitcoms, and future shows. So the last poster I saw was an upcoming show called Flashpoint which looked like an action drama.

So the beginning door of my career path has opened, almost like the first level of a video game. I walked in glancing at all I can in a blink of an eye noticing the setup. It was awesome, exactly as it is in the movies, or how a newsroom is. Cool electronical equipment, computers, and televisions that are tuned in to every channel that has news coverage. So Sarah the coordinator led me to me mentor, who happened to be in the News production department Simone. After the introductions to the mentor and her employees, Sara wished me good luck and there it was... Intensity in a Newsroom.

The story of today doesn't end here, as soon as Sara left back to her area the intensity had started. ON THE FIRST DAY!

At first, Simone seemed kind of a hard ass, since she got me introduced to so many procedures of an intern. It was like throwing a kid who didn't know how to swim in a deep pool. But this kid Garvin, likes the pool or the ocean, so I went ahead and swam right along. She brought me to the office supplies room, grabing the most important tools for the intern; a notepad and pen. What was real unusual was that the pen was all not ball point pens. It was the same type of pen as markers. She said it had drove her crazy, but I thought to myself, I could get used to this or bring a ball point pen next time im here.

So we went back to the newsroom area, and I swear she spit information that would take a whole day to explain in 5 minutes. Basically I was to learn how to write news stories for anchors and produce a newsshow. In addition to my introduction, she wanted to find out what I really wanted to do in the newsroom.

Here was my excited answer: "Well, since I studied film, video, theater, photography, and graphic design I would love to do the technical stuff. Anything with cameras, control boards, anything techinical, even if I have to setup wires for the studio I am more than willing to."

Her reply was: "Oh good, I'm surprised, usually all our interns want to become reporters or anchors, thank goodness."

I thought in my head: "Whoa, this is gonna be sick, I'll really get to do a lot more with my career now. Now with broadcast TV journalism, I can fill my empty cup with more dope knowledge."

But before all that, I must learn what is on the intern agreement, I must learn to write shows or segment stories in a given time by the show producer, run the teleprompter and assist the directors and anchors.

It was on. By the first hour, I was instructed to write 3 test stories from other news sources. Basically I was to write about stories as I would tell to my friend but in something appropriate for TV. This I thought was a good way to work on my writing skills for film. But I have to understand that this is a different style of writing, its journalism. Still, I believe that this is a form of storytelling which film is a form of doing.

So towards the end of the first day, I had been asked to check out a LIVE NEWS SHOW. It was like theater, but catered towards a wider audience and the atmosphere was do good or mess up. Sucks to mess up, but it happens. Any ways I was introduced to the control room, with the craziest equipment and procedures for a show. There's a technical director, a show director, and a producer. It was like an action movie, so exciting and things weren't too foriegn to me. The video terms, graphics were all like the back of my hand, all recognizable.

Well that ends the first day, I might not write this much, it was just a really cool fun first day at my internship.

The First Day- 1 hour and 15 minutes before I start.

For the official start, I thought it was actually a week before. Unfortunately it wasn't and I was stoked and ready for it. Getting in the news room is a whole new experience for me, its away from film/video production which might be a good thing. Different environment and experience will probably strengthen my skills in terms of media creation. Either way I will keep neutral about learning and working hard. The cup must be half full in order to poor more water.

Anyways I had to mention this, this morning I had a rude awakening from my brothers stupid alarm clock ringtone because it had woken me up 2 hours earlier then what I set my alarm to. I lost an hour of sleep, but its cool cause I took a 20 minute power nap. Well, thats one motivation to move out so I won't have to share a room with my annoying brother. HARD WORK TIME.
